An 'Almanach' is more like a yearbook: in addition to a calendar section, it also contains a lot of information, data, or texts on a specific topic. 'Almanach' sounds much more specialized and is not used for a normal everyday appointment calendar. So for appointments you say 'Kalender'; for an information-rich yearbook, 'Almanach' is more appropriate.
