The word comes from 'an-denken' (to think of/about). It describes a state in which you direct your thoughts toward something specific—whether toward God (religious meaning) or toward a story (attentive listening).

'Aufmerksamkeit' is the normal, general word: you need it when studying, in a conversation, or in traffic. 'Andacht' sounds quieter, more solemn, and more inward. It fits especially when someone listens very calmly and with composure, for example to music, a speech, or in a serious mood. In everyday life, 'Aufmerksamkeit' is usually more natural. 'Andacht' is used more when the calm, almost solemn atmosphere is important.
