The word is composed of 'andern' (an old form of 'anderen', meaning 'other') and 'Orts' (the genitive of 'Ort', meaning 'place'). So it literally means 'of another place' or 'in another place'.

When 'andernorts' (elsewhere) stands at the beginning of the sentence (position 1), the conjugated verb moves to position 2. However, the adverb can also stand after the verb in the middle of the sentence.

This adverb belongs to formal language and is used mainly in texts, news reports, or official speeches. It is rather rare in everyday spoken language.
