A person who stands by the side of the road and tries to get a free ride from passing cars by using a hand signal, usually an extended thumb.

The word is derived from the verb 'anhalten' (to stop). An 'Anhalter' (hitchhiker) is therefore a person who wants to get drivers to stop so they can get a ride.

'der Passagier' and 'der Anhalter' both refer to people who ride in a vehicle. The difference lies in the type of journey. A 'Passagier' rides on public transportation such as a train, bus, airplane, or ship and is not part of the crew. An 'Anhalter' stands by the side of the road and hopes that someone will give them a free ride in a car. The words can be confused because a hitchhiker also rides along after getting in. But 'Anhalter' mainly describes how the person is trying to get a ride; 'Passagier' describes the role in the means of transportation.
