anlügen vs lügen

to lie

'lügen' and 'anlügen' both mean that someone deliberately does not tell the truth. The difference lies in the direction. 'lügen' can be used generally: a person says something false, without the affected person having to be named. 'anlügen' normally needs a person as its object: you lie directly to someone. That is why you can say 'Er lügt' (he is lying), but also 'Er lügt mich an' (he is lying to me). The words can be confused because they are very close. If you want to say who is directly affected by the lie, 'anlügen' is more precise.

Visual example for lügen
