Word family
'Auslauf' is derived from the separable verb 'auslaufen' (to leak / run out / sail out). This connection helps you understand the different meanings: a liquid leaks out, a product is phased out, a ship sails out of the harbor, and animals get exercise outdoors.

'das Ende' and 'der Auslauf' can both describe that something does not continue. 'das Ende' is the normal and general word for the end of almost anything. 'der Auslauf' is narrower: in this meaning, it is usually about a product, model, contract, or regulation gradually no longer being available or valid. That is why 'Auslauf' often sounds like language from commerce, technology, or administration. For a film, a meeting, or a party, you normally say 'Ende', not 'Auslauf'.
