A place, usually elevated, from which you have a good and wide view of the landscape or a city.
Vom Aussichtspunkt auf dem Berg hatten wir einen fantastischen Blick über das ganze Tal.
From the viewpoint on the mountain, we had a fantastic view over the whole valley.
The word consists of 'Aussicht' (view) and 'Punkt' (point). An 'Aussicht' is a view into the distance, and a 'Punkt' is a place. So an Aussichtspunkt is literally a 'point with a view'.
Dieser Punkt bietet eine wunderbare Aussicht auf die Stadt.
This point offers a wonderful view of the city.
To describe the location, you use 'auf dem Aussichtspunkt' (at the viewpoint, dative). To describe the direction there, you say 'zum Aussichtspunkt' (to the viewpoint, dative).
Wir wandern morgen zum Aussichtspunkt auf dem Gipfel.
Tomorrow we are hiking to the viewpoint on the summit.
At a viewpoint, you can 'die Aussicht genießen' (enjoy the view), 'einen Blick auf etwas haben' (have a view of something), or simply 'stehen und schauen' (stand and look).
Von hier oben kann man die Aussicht über den See genießen.
From up here, you can enjoy the view over the lake.
