Usage tips
Compound word
The word consists of 'Aussicht' (view) and 'Punkt' (point). An 'Aussicht' is a view into the distance, and a 'Punkt' is a place. So an Aussichtspunkt is literally a 'point with a view'.
EXAMPLE
Dieser Punkt bietet eine wunderbare Aussicht auf die Stadt.
This point offers a wonderful view of the city.
Place and direction
To describe the location, you use 'auf dem Aussichtspunkt' (at the viewpoint, dative). To describe the direction there, you say 'zum Aussichtspunkt' (to the viewpoint, dative).
EXAMPLE
Wir wandern morgen zum Aussichtspunkt auf dem Gipfel.
Tomorrow we are hiking to the viewpoint on the summit.
Typical verbs
At a viewpoint, you can 'die Aussicht genießen' (enjoy the view), 'einen Blick auf etwas haben' (have a view of something), or simply 'stehen und schauen' (stand and look).
EXAMPLE
Von hier oben kann man die Aussicht über den See genießen.
From up here, you can enjoy the view over the lake.

Aussichtspunkt vs Aussicht
view / prospect
'die Aussicht' and 'der Aussichtspunkt' are closely related, but they do not mean the same thing. 'Aussicht' is the view you have from a place. 'Aussichtspunkt' is the place itself from which you can see well. Learners can easily confuse the words because both often come up when hiking, traveling, or talking about a city. Memory tip: You stand at the 'Aussichtspunkt'; you see the 'Aussicht'.
Aussichtspunkt
Nach einer Stunde Wanderung erreichen sie den Aussichtspunkt über dem Tal.
After an hour of hiking, they reach the viewpoint above the valley.
Aussicht
Die Aussicht vom Turm ist bei klarem Wetter besonders schön.
The view from the tower is especially beautiful in clear weather.
