Word structure with '-ei'
The ending '-ei' often refers to a place where a trade is practiced or a business is run. 'Die Bäckerei' (the bakery) is therefore the baker's place, just as 'die Metzgerei' (the butcher's shop) is the butcher's place.

Die alte Bäckerei im Dorf musste vor einem Jahr leider schließen.

Word family
The word belongs to the family of 'backen' (to bake). The person who bakes professionally is 'der Bäcker' (the baker), and the place where he works and sells is 'die Bäckerei' (the bakery).

Typical prepositions
To express direction, you say 'ich gehe zur Bäckerei' (I'm going to the bakery) or 'in die Bäckerei' (into the bakery). When referring to the place where you are or where you buy something, you use 'ich bin in der Bäckerei' (I'm in the bakery) or, colloquially, also 'beim Bäcker' (at the baker's).
