'Bauplan' (blueprint) is a compound noun made up of 'Bau' (construction/building, from the verb 'bauen' — to build) and 'Plan' (plan). So it is literally a plan according to which something is built.

A Bauplan (blueprint) is 'gezeichnet' (drawn), 'entworfen' (designed), or 'erstellt' (created) by an architect. Construction workers 'lesen' (read) or 'studieren' (study) the plan, and an authority has to 'genehmigen' (approve) it.

floor plan / outline
Both words can refer to technical plans for a building. Grundriss specifically shows the arrangement of rooms, walls, doors, and windows from a bird’s-eye view, whereas Bauplan can also include additional drawings, dimensions, and the complete design. Use “Grundriss” for this individual representation and “Bauplan” for the more comprehensive plan.
