'Bauplan' (blueprint) is a compound noun made up of 'Bau' (construction/building, from the verb 'bauen' — to build) and 'Plan' (plan). So it is literally a plan according to which something is built.

A Bauplan (blueprint) is 'gezeichnet' (drawn), 'entworfen' (designed), or 'erstellt' (created) by an architect. Construction workers 'lesen' (read) or 'studieren' (study) the plan, and an authority has to 'genehmigen' (approve) it.

'der Plan' and 'der Bauplan' can both be a drawing that shows how something is structured. However, 'der Plan' is much more general. It can be a city map, a timetable, or a simple overview, for example. 'der Bauplan' is specifically connected to construction and shows technical details such as dimensions, walls, or rooms. The words can be confused because a blueprint is a type of plan. When it is about a building or another structure, 'Bauplan' is more precise. In other situations, 'Plan' is usually enough.
