The word consists of 'bei' and 'sammen'. The second part is an old form related to 'sammeln' (to collect) and 'zusammen' (together). So it describes the state of being gathered in one place.

As an adverb, 'beisammen' (together) usually comes at the end of a sentence or clause. It is very often combined with the verbs 'sein' (to be), 'sitzen' (to sit), or 'haben' (to have).

For several people in one place, both zusammen and beisammen are possible. Beisammen highlights being present together in one place, while zusammen can also mean a general connection or joint action. Use beisammen when the assembled group is the focus.
