Usage tips
Only in fixed expressions
The word 'Betracht' (consideration) does not exist as an independent noun in modern language. It is used exclusively in the fixed expressions 'in Betracht ziehen' (to consider), 'in Betracht kommen' (to be an option), and 'außer Betracht lassen' (to disregard).
EXAMPLE
Ein Umzug in eine andere Stadt kommt für uns nicht in Betracht.
Moving to another city is not an option for us.
Word family
The noun 'Betracht' (consideration) is related to the verb 'betrachten' (to look at, to consider). This connection helps you understand the meaning of the expressions, which all have to do with 'berücksichtigen' (to take into account) or 'erwägen' (to consider).
EXAMPLE
Wenn man die Situation genau betrachtet, gibt es nur eine Lösung.
If you look at the situation closely, there is only one solution.
Use with the accusative
The expression 'in Betracht ziehen' (to consider) always requires an accusative object. The subject (a person or group) actively 'zieht' (considers) 'etwas' (something, the option) 'in Betracht' (as a possibility).
EXAMPLE
Die Firma zieht eine Investition in neue Technologien in Betracht.
The company is considering an investment in new technologies.
Use with the nominative
In contrast to 'ziehen' (to draw/consider), 'in Betracht kommen' (to be an option) is used with a subject in the nominative. 'Etwas' (something, an option or person) passively 'comes' into question as a possibility.
EXAMPLE
Für den Job kommt nur jemand mit viel Erfahrung in Betracht.
Only someone with a lot of experience is an option for the job.
