'braun' and 'bräunlich' both describe colors with brown in them. You use 'braun' when the color is clearly and definitely brown. You use 'bräunlich' when something only has a brown element or is not completely clearly brown. The words can be confused because they look very similar. However, 'bräunlich' is more cautious and more precise when the color seems mixed, for example somewhere between gray, yellow, or red and brown.
