Usage tips
Word composition
This word is a simple compound made up of 'Büro' (office) and 'Gebäude' (building). So it refers exactly to what the individual parts describe: a building full of offices.
EXAMPLE
In der Innenstadt werden viele neue Bürogebäude gebaut.
Many new office buildings are being built in the city center.
Preposition 'in'
Pay attention to the case after the preposition 'in': you work 'in einem' (dative) Bürogebäude, but you move 'in ein' (accusative) neues Bürogebäude.
EXAMPLE
Er arbeitet in einem großen Bürogebäude am Stadtrand.
He works in a large office building on the outskirts of the city.
Typical verbs
Common verbs used in connection with an office building are 'bauen' (to build), 'mieten' (to rent), 'renovieren' (to renovate), or 'verlassen' (to leave).
EXAMPLE
Die Firma hat ein ganzes Stockwerk in einem Bürogebäude gemietet.
The company rented an entire floor in an office building.

Bürogebäude vs Büro
office / bureau
'das Büro' and 'das Bürogebäude' are closely related, but they do not mean the same thing. 'Büro' usually means a room or several rooms where work is done. 'Bürogebäude' means the whole building that contains many offices. The words are easy to confuse because in both cases you think of work with desks. If you mean the workplace or room, you say 'Büro'. If you mean the building as a whole, 'Bürogebäude' is more precise.
Bürogebäude
Das alte Bürogebäude wurde im letzten Jahr renoviert.
The old office building was renovated last year.
Büro
Vor dem Termin wartet er kurz vor dem Büro der Sachbearbeiterin.
Before the appointment, he waits briefly outside the case worker's office.
