Usage tips
Compound word
The word is a chain of terms: 'Bund' (federation) + 'Tag' (parliament) becomes 'Bundestag'. An 'Abgeordneter' is a person who has been 'abgeordnet' (delegated/sent) by the citizens. Together, it therefore means a 'delegated person of the federal parliament'.
EXAMPLE
Ein Bundestagsabgeordneter vertritt die Bürger seines Wahlkreises.
A member of the Bundestag represents the citizens of their electoral district.
Adjectival declension
This noun is declined like an adjective. Pay attention to the endings: 'der Bundestagsabgeordnete' (nominative), 'den Bundestagsabgeordneten' (accusative), 'ein Bundestagsabgeordneter' (indefinite nominative).
EXAMPLE
Ich habe gestern mit einem Bundestagsabgeordneten gesprochen.
Yesterday I spoke with a member of the Bundestag.
Common abbreviation
In the media and in politics, the abbreviation 'MdB' is often used. It stands for 'Mitglied des Bundestages' (member of the Bundestag) and has the same meaning.
EXAMPLE
Die MdB hielt eine Rede zur aktuellen Wirtschaftslage.
The member of the Bundestag gave a speech on the current economic situation.

Bundestagsabgeordnete vs Politiker
politician
'Politiker' and 'Bundestagsabgeordneter' both refer to people who work professionally in politics. However, 'Politiker' is much more general: it can be a person in a party, in a city, in a ministry, or in a parliament. 'Bundestagsabgeordneter' is more specific and refers only to an elected member of the German Bundestag. The words can be confused because a member of the Bundestag is always also a politician. But not every politician is a member of the Bundestag. If you want to name the office precisely, 'Bundestagsabgeordneter' is more appropriate.
