'der Balkon' and 'die Dachterrasse' are both open areas on or attached to a building where you can sit outside. A 'Balkon' is attached to or located on the outside of an apartment and is usually smaller. You reach it directly from a room. A 'Dachterrasse' is on the roof of a building and is often larger and designed like a terrace. The words can be confused because both are part of outdoor living. Remember: at the edge of the apartment, it is a 'Balkon'; up on the roof, it is more likely a 'Dachterrasse'.
