Deponie vs Halde

spoil heap / pile

'die Halde' and 'die Deponie' can both refer to places or piles where material is lying. The difference lies in the purpose and the organization. A 'Halde' is usually a piled-up hill of material, for example from mining or industry. A 'Deponie' is a designated and secured place where waste is stored permanently. The words can be confused because colloquially people also say 'Müllhalde' (dump). More precisely, however: for waste and official storage, 'Deponie' fits better; for piled-up industrial or mining material, 'Halde' is more appropriate.
