The word 'Dreher' (lathe operator) is derived directly from the verb 'drehen' (to turn). The ending '-er' here denotes a person who performs the action of turning. A Dreher is therefore someone who turns something professionally.

He learned how to turn metal parts precisely.
You can easily recognize the meaning of 'Dreher' from the context. If people are talking about a profession, factory, or metal, it means the skilled worker. In a sports context, it refers to a rotating ball. In connection with smoking or tobacco, it means a hand-rolled cigarette.
Der Dreher in der Fabrik bedient eine große Maschine.
The lathe operator in the factory operates a large machine.
In a sports context, 'Dreher' is often combined with verbs like 'schlagen' (to hit), 'spielen' (to play), or 'werfen' (to throw). People also speak of a ball 'mit Dreher' (with spin).
Der Tennisprofi ist bekannt für seine Vorhand mit extrem viel Dreher.
The tennis pro is known for his forehand with an extreme amount of spin.
In the meaning of 'selbstgedrehte Zigarette' (hand-rolled cigarette), 'Dreher' is a colloquial word. In formal situations, you would generally avoid this expression.
