'Drüben' (over there) always means 'on the other side' of an imagined or real line. That can be a street, a river, a room, or a larger geographical border. The speaker and listener have to know which 'other side' is meant.
Wohnst du auf dieser Seite vom Fluss? – Nein, ich wohne drüben.
Do you live on this side of the river? – No, I live over there.
As an adverb, 'drüben' (over there) can stand in different positions in the sentence. It often stands at the beginning of the sentence (position 1), followed by the verb. But it can also stand after the verb or at the end of the sentence.
Drüben ist der Eingang zum Museum.
Over there is the entrance to the museum.
This meaning is specific to the time of German division (before 1990). 'Drüben' (over there) referred to the other German state respectively (the GDR from a West German perspective and vice versa). Today it is only used when talking about that period.
Meine Großeltern hatten Verwandte drüben, die sie nur selten sehen konnten.
My grandparents had relatives over there whom they could only rarely see.

'da' and 'drüben' can both refer to a place. 'da' is very general and simply means a place that you point to or are currently talking about. 'drüben' is more specific: it means a place on the other side, for example on the other side of the street, in the other room, or on the opposite bank. Learners may confuse the words because both are often connected with pointing. If you simply mean 'at this place', 'da' fits. If there is a boundary or side between here and the place, 'drüben' fits better.
