The state in which a group of people has the same opinion or works together in harmony. It describes agreement and consensus.

'Einigkeit' belongs to the word family of 'eins' (one). From the number 'eins' comes the adjective 'einig' (to be in agreement). With the ending '-keit', it becomes the abstract noun 'die Einigkeit' (unity).
Die Geschwister waren sich endlich einig.
The siblings finally agreed.
'Einigkeit' is often used with the verbs 'herrschen' (to prevail/exist) or 'erzielen' (to achieve). 'Einigkeit herrscht' describes a state, while 'Einigkeit erzielen' describes a process.

The expression 'Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit' (Unity and Justice and Freedom) is the beginning of the German national anthem. The word therefore has important political and cultural significance in Germany.

'die Einheit' and 'die Einigkeit' both have to do with fitting together and acting jointly. 'Einigkeit' especially means that people have the same opinion or have agreed on something. 'Einheit' is broader and means the cohesion or solidarity of a group, beyond just one opinion. The words can be confused because when a group has agreement, it often also appears as a unit. As a guide: in discussions and decisions, 'Einigkeit' fits better; for cohesion or presenting a united front, 'Einheit' is more appropriate.
Nach langer Diskussion herrscht im Team endlich Einigkeit über den Plan.
