einwandern vs ansiedeln

to settle / establish

'sich ansiedeln' and 'einwandern' can both have to do with a permanent new place of residence. 'einwandern' is used when someone moves to another country in order to live there. The border between countries is important here. 'sich ansiedeln' says more generally that someone settles in a place; that can be in a country, in a region, or in a village. The words can be confused because immigrants often later settle somewhere. Remember: 'einwandern' describes the movement into a foreign country, while 'sich ansiedeln' describes living and staying in a particular place.
