An increasingly outdated expression describing that someone feels disgust or strong aversion. It is used almost exclusively predicatively, often in the phrase 'jemandem ist ekel vor etwas' (someone is disgusted by something).

The adjective 'ekel' is not used before a noun. It appears in a fixed structure with the verb 'sein' (to be): a person (in the dative) is disgusted by something (in the dative): 'jemandem ist ekel vor einer Sache'.

This form is outdated and is hardly used in modern everyday language anymore. You find it mainly in older literature.

'übel' and 'ekel' can both have to do with strong aversion or a bad feeling. 'übel' is used when someone feels nauseous or when a smell or taste is very unpleasant. 'ekel' describes that someone feels disgust toward something, but it is becoming outdated and appears almost only in the phrase 'jemandem ist ekel vor etwas' (someone is disgusted by something). The words can be confused because disgust can also cause nausea. In everyday German today, people usually say 'mir ist übel' (I feel nauseous) or 'ich ekle mich vor ...' (I am disgusted by ...); 'mir ist ekel vor ...' sounds old-fashioned.
