The floor of a building that is at the level of the surrounding ground or street.

The word is a clear compound of 'Erde' (earth/ground) and 'Geschoss' (floor, story). It literally refers to the floor that lies at ground level.

Careful: the German 'Erdgeschoss' (ground floor) is what is often called the 'first floor' in American English and the 'ground floor' in British English. The German 'erste Stock' (first floor) is the floor above it.

'das Erdgeschoss' and 'das Obergeschoss' both refer to floors in a building. 'Das Erdgeschoss' is at street level or entrance level. 'Das Obergeschoss' is above it, for example on the first floor or higher. Learners may confuse the words because both have to do with floors. The important point is the orientation toward the ground: 'Erdgeschoss' is downstairs at street level, while 'Obergeschoss' is above it.
