reconnaissance
In a military or strategic context, the targeted collection of information about an area, the enemy, or specific conditions. The goal is to gain a tactical advantage.

The noun 'die Erkundung' (exploration/reconnaissance) is derived directly from the verb 'erkunden' (to explore/scout). The verb means to investigate something unknown in order to get to know it. The ending '-ung' turns the action of the verb into a noun.

Untersuchung and Erkundung can both be used to gather information about a matter.
