'der Terrorismus' and 'der Extremismus' can both have to do with radical political, religious, or ideological goals. The important difference is violence: 'Terrorismus' means the use of violence and terror to achieve goals. 'Extremismus' first describes an extreme attitude that strongly deviates from social norms and may approve of radical means. Not all extremism is automatically terrorism. The words can be confused because terrorism often grows out of extremist ideas. 'Extremismus' fits more with the attitude, while 'Terrorismus' fits the violent method.
