A word or expression with a special, precisely defined meaning in a particular field, science, or profession. For outsiders, the meaning is often not immediately understandable.

'Fachbegriff' is made up of 'das Fach' (field/subject, in the sense of a specialist field) and 'der Begriff' (term/concept). So it is literally a term from a particular field.

Typical verbs are 'einen Fachbegriff verwenden' (to use a technical term), 'erklären' (to explain), or 'lernen' (to learn).

Terminus and Fachbegriff can both refer to a precisely defined expression in a specialized field. Terminus sounds more formal and academic, while Fachbegriff is also common in everyday professional contexts. The choice therefore usually concerns the register, not the content being referred to.
