A word or expression with a special, precisely defined meaning in a particular field, science, or profession. For outsiders, the meaning is often not immediately understandable.
example
Im Jurastudium muss man unzählige lateinische Fachbegriffe lernen.
In law school, you have to learn countless Latin technical terms.
Usage tips
Compound structure
'Fachbegriff' is made up of 'das Fach' (field/subject, in the sense of a specialist field) and 'der Begriff' (term/concept). So it is literally a term from a particular field.
EXAMPLE
„Photosynthese“ ist ein Fachbegriff aus der Biologie.
'Photosynthese' (photosynthesis) is a technical term from biology.
Typical collocations
The field is often named with an adjective, e.g. 'medizinische Fachbegriffe' (medical technical terms), 'juristische Fachbegriffe' (legal technical terms), or 'technische Fachbegriffe' (technical terms in engineering/technology). Typical verbs are 'einen Fachbegriff verwenden' (to use a technical term), 'erklären' (to explain), or 'lernen' (to learn).
EXAMPLE
Der Arzt versuchte, auf komplizierte medizinische Fachbegriffe zu verzichten.
The doctor tried to avoid complicated medical technical terms.
Sentence structure
To name the field, German often uses the genitive or a preposition. Common formulations are 'ein Fachbegriff der Physik' (a technical term of physics) or 'ein Fachbegriff aus der IT' (a technical term from IT).
EXAMPLE
„Impedanz“ ist ein Fachbegriff aus der Elektrotechnik.
'Impedanz' (impedance) is a technical term from electrical engineering.

Fachbegriff vs Begriff
term
'der Begriff' and 'der Fachbegriff' are very closely related. 'der Begriff' is general and can appear in everyday life, school, or work. 'der Fachbegriff' is more specific: it belongs to a particular subject area, profession, or science and has a precise meaning there. Learners may confuse the words because every technical term is also a term. But not every term is a technical term. If a word is used in exactly that way only in a specialized field, 'Fachbegriff' is more precise.
Fachbegriff
Bei der Reparatur benutzt der Techniker einen Fachbegriff, den ich nicht kenne.
During the repair, the technician uses a technical term that I don't know.
Begriff
Frau Wagner fragt nach dem Begriff, weil er im Vertrag unklar ist.
Ms. Wagner asks about the term because it is unclear in the contract.
