'Party' and 'Feierlichkeit' both have to do with festive situations. However, 'Party' is an everyday word for a casual celebration with fun, music, and guests. 'Feierlichkeit' sounds much more formal and dignified. It is used more for official or ceremonial occasions, for example an honoring, an opening, or a formal ceremony. The words can be confused because both can be a kind of celebration. In a casual situation, however, 'Feierlichkeit' sounds too heavy or too official. For friends and music, people usually say 'Party'.
Die Feierlichkeit zur Eröffnung des neuen Rathauses beginnt um zehn Uhr.
