A device with which you can operate another device from a distance. It is often used synonymously with 'Fernbedienung' (remote control).

The word consists of the adjective 'fern' (far away) and the noun 'die Steuerung' (control). So it literally describes controlling something from a distance.

The words can be confused because a Fernsteuerung is a special kind of Steuerung. If distance is important, use 'Fernsteuerung'; if you mean the control system in general, 'Steuerung' fits.
