Participle as an adjective
'Fokussiert' (focused) is the past participle of the verb 'fokussieren' (to focus) and is very often used as an adjective. It can stand before a noun, be used with 'sein' (to be), or function as an adverb to describe an activity.
EXAMPLE
Ein fokussierter Mitarbeiter macht weniger Fehler.
A focused employee makes fewer mistakes.
Use with 'auf'
When you want to say what the concentration is directed toward, use the preposition 'auf' followed by the accusative.
EXAMPLE
Der Sportler ist voll und ganz auf den Wettkampf fokussiert.
The athlete is completely focused on the competition.

'aufmerksam' and 'fokussiert' both describe someone concentrating on something. 'aufmerksam' fits especially well when someone listens carefully, looks closely, or shows interest. In class, you are 'aufmerksam' when you listen; when working on a difficult task, you are 'fokussiert' when you stay completely with that task.
