fußen vs stehen

to stand

'stehen' and 'fußen' can both have to do with feet or with a foundation, but they are used very differently. 'stehen' is the normal word when someone is on their feet. The literal meaning of 'fußen' is very rare today and sounds elevated or old-fashioned. Much more common is the expression 'auf etwas fußen' (to be based on something): then it means that something is based on a foundation. Learners may confuse the words because 'fußen' reminds them of 'Fuß' (foot). In everyday language, you almost always say 'stehen' for the body position.
