The word is built very logically. It consists of 'Gäste' (guests, plural of 'Gast') and 'Zimmer' (room). The '-e-' is a linking sound that connects the two words. So it is literally a room for guests.

Common verbs used in connection with the guest room are 'herrichten' (to prepare), 'beziehen' (to move into/occupy), 'übernachten' (to stay overnight), and 'unterbringen' (to accommodate).

Pay attention to the difference between 'im' (dative) for location and 'ins' (accusative) for direction. You sleep 'im' Gästezimmer (in the guest room), but you bring the suitcases 'ins' Gästezimmer (into the guest room).
