Usage tips
Word composition
The word is built very logically. It consists of 'Gäste' (guests, plural of 'Gast') and 'Zimmer' (room). The '-e-' is a linking sound that connects the two words. So it is literally a room for guests.
EXAMPLE
Wir haben unser altes Arbeitszimmer in ein Gästezimmer umgebaut.
We converted our old study into a guest room.
Typical verbs
Common verbs used in connection with the guest room are 'herrichten' (to prepare), 'beziehen' (to move into/occupy), 'übernachten' (to stay overnight), and 'unterbringen' (to accommodate).
EXAMPLE
Wir müssen das Gästezimmer noch für den Besuch am Wochenende herrichten.
We still have to prepare the guest room for the visitors this weekend.
Correct preposition
Pay attention to the difference between 'im' (dative) for location and 'ins' (accusative) for direction. You sleep 'im' Gästezimmer (in the guest room), but you bring the suitcases 'ins' Gästezimmer (into the guest room).
EXAMPLE
Deine Tante schläft im Gästezimmer.
Your aunt is sleeping in the guest room.

Gästezimmer vs Schlafzimmer
bedroom
'das Schlafzimmer' and 'das Gästezimmer' can both have a bed and be used for sleeping. The most important difference is who the room is intended for. The bedroom is the normal sleeping room of the people who live there. The guest room is prepared for visitors who are only staying for a while. Learners may confuse the words because guests sleep in a guest room. Still, it is not automatically called a bedroom, because its purpose is to accommodate guests.
Gästezimmer
Am Wochenende schläft meine Schwester im Gästezimmer.
My sister is sleeping in the guest room this weekend.
