Globe vs Globus

globe

'der Globus' and 'der Globe' look very similar and can therefore easily be confused. For a spherical model of the Earth, German normally uses 'der Globus'. 'der Globe' can also mean such a model of the Earth, but it is much less common in this meaning. Much more often, 'der Globe' means the name of the famous theater in London associated with Shakespeare. So if you are talking about a model of the Earth in class or at home, 'Globus' is the natural choice. For the theater in London, you say 'Globe'.
