'der Index' and 'das Glossar' often appear at the end of a book and have to do with important words in the text. The difference is their function. An 'Index' shows on which pages a word, name, or topic appears. A 'Glossar' explains technical terms or difficult words. The words can be confused because both are often arranged alphabetically. If you want to find a page, you need the index; if you want to understand the meaning of a term, the glossary helps.
