'die Grünfläche' is more general and means a green space, especially in a city, for example a meadow, a park, or a patch of lawn. The words can be confused because a garden can also be a green space. But not every green space is a garden. For a private property, you usually say 'Garten'; for public or urban areas, 'Grünfläche' is more common.
