Usage tips
Typical collocations
In connection with illnesses, the verb 'haben' (to have) or 'bekommen' (to get) is often used. For example, you can say 'Herpes haben' (to have herpes) or 'Herpes bekommen' (to get herpes). The affected body part is often placed before it as a compound, e.g. 'Lippenherpes' (cold sores / lip herpes).
EXAMPLE
Ich hoffe, ich bekomme keinen Herpes.
I hope I don't get herpes.
Use without an article
When talking about yourself or another person having this illness, 'Herpes' (herpes), like many other names of illnesses, is often used without an article.
EXAMPLE
Meine Schwester hat gerade Herpes.
My sister has herpes right now.
Use in the singular
In general usage, this word is used almost exclusively in the singular, even when there are several blisters. The plural form is extremely rare and found only in specialist medical texts.
EXAMPLE
Diese Salbe soll gegen Herpes helfen.
This ointment is supposed to help against herpes.
