The adjective is formed from the name of the region 'Holstein' and the suffix '-isch' (-ish). This pattern is used for many geographic adjectives, e.g. 'bayerisch' (Bavarian), 'sächsisch' (Saxon).

When 'holsteinisch' is used as a normal adjective before a noun, it is written in lowercase. However, if it is part of a fixed proper name, it is capitalized.
