This word is a clear example of a German compound word: it combines 'Industrie' (industry) and 'Unternehmen' (company). The '-n-' in the middle is a linking n, which makes the two words easier to pronounce together.

The base word is 'das Unternehmen' (the company). An 'Industrieunternehmen' (industrial company) is therefore a specific type of company. In an economic context, 'Industrieunternehmen' (industrial company) is often combined with certain adjectives. Typical examples are 'ein mittelständisches' (a medium-sized), 'ein führendes' (a leading), or 'ein internationales' (an international) Industrieunternehmen.
