Compound word
The word is composed of 'Inhalt' (content) and 'Angabe' (statement/indication), connected by an '-s-'. It literally means an 'Angabe des Inhalts' (statement of the content), and thus describes exactly what it does.
EXAMPLE

Typical verbs
An 'Inhaltsangabe' (summary) is typically 'geschrieben' (written), 'verfasst' (composed), or 'erstellt' (created). In a school context, students are often also given the task of 'anzufertigen' (producing) a summary.

Establishing a reference
To connect the summary with the work, you usually use the preposition 'zu' with the dative, for example 'eine Inhaltsangabe zu einem Film' (a summary of a film), or the genitive, for example 'die Inhaltsangabe des Films' (the summary of the film).
