The word is composed of 'Inhalt' (content) and 'Angabe' (statement/indication), connected by an '-s-'. It literally means an 'Angabe des Inhalts' (statement of the content), and thus describes exactly what it does.

An 'Inhaltsangabe' (summary) is typically 'geschrieben' (written), 'verfasst' (composed), or 'erstellt' (created). In a school context, students are often also given the task of 'anzufertigen' (producing) a summary.

'die Interpretation' and 'die Inhaltsangabe' often both come up with texts, films, or plays. An 'Inhaltsangabe' (summary) says briefly and factually what happens or what something is about. An 'Interpretation' explains what something can mean and how it is understood. Learners often confuse these words especially in school, because both can be assignments about a text. The important difference is: first summarize, then interpret. For the plot, use 'Inhaltsangabe'; for the meaning, use 'Interpretation'.
