The surface or side of an object that faces inward or is located on the inside. The opposite of the outside.
example
Auf der Innenseite des Buchdeckels stand eine persönliche Widmung.
There was a personal dedication on the inside of the book cover.
Usage tips
Compound word
The word is clearly composed of 'innen' (inside) and 'Seite' (side). So it literally describes the side that is on the inside. The 'n' between the two parts of the word is a linking n, which makes pronunciation easier.
EXAMPLE
Bitte schreiben Sie Ihren Namen auf die Innenseite des Umschlags.
Please write your name on the inside of the envelope.
Correct preposition
To describe a position, 'Innenseite' (inside) is almost always used with the preposition 'auf' (on) and the dative. So you say 'auf der Innenseite' (on the inside).
EXAMPLE
Auf der Innenseite meiner Hand habe ich einen kleinen Kratzer.
I have a small scratch on the inside of my hand.
Typical collocations
People often talk about the inside of items of clothing, containers, or body parts. Typical examples are the inside of a jacket, a lid, an envelope, or the hand.
EXAMPLE
Die Telefonnummer steht auf der Innenseite der Speisekarte.
The phone number is on the inside of the menu.

Innenseite vs Oberfläche
surface
'die Oberfläche' and 'die Innenseite' are often opposites when talking about the sides of an object. 'Oberfläche' means the outer or upper visible surface. 'Innenseite' means the side that faces inward or is located on the inside. You can confuse the words when talking generally about a surface. What matters then is the direction: outside or on top is the Oberfläche, inside is the Innenseite. With liquids, however, you normally say 'Oberfläche', not 'Innenseite'.
Innenseite
Bitte reinige auch die Innenseite der Tasche, dort ist Sand.
Please also clean the inside of the bag; there is sand there.
Oberfläche
Auf der Oberfläche des Handys sind kleine Kratzer zu sehen.
Small scratches can be seen on the surface of the phone.
