The concept of isolation is contained in the meaning of an island. The German word 'isoliert' (isolated) comes from the Latin word for island, 'insula'. An island is therefore, by definition, an isolated place.
Many people dream of living on a deserted island, far away from everything.
Pay attention to the difference between dative and accusative: 'auf einer Insel' (on an island, dative) describes a location, while 'auf eine Insel' (to an island, accusative) indicates a direction.
He has been living on a small island for ten years.
In the figurative sense, 'Insel' (island) refers to an isolated area. Such compounds are often found in everyday language, such as 'Verkehrsinsel' (traffic island), 'Kücheninsel' (kitchen island), or also 'eine Insel der Ruhe' (an island of calm).
In the middle of the noisy office, she has created a small island of calm for herself.
peninsula
'die Insel' and 'die Halbinsel' both describe land near water. The difference is simple but important: an island is completely surrounded by water. A peninsula is surrounded by water on only three sides and remains connected to the mainland on one side. The words can be confused because both can look like separate pieces of land in the water. If you cannot reach the mainland at all without a bridge or boat, it is an island. If there is still a natural land connection, it is a peninsula.

In the summer, we take the ferry to a small island.
The peninsula extends far into the sea, but it is connected to the mainland in the north.
