When talking about the religion or culture in general, 'Judentum' (Judaism) is often used without an article. However, when talking about a specific historical or geographical form, the article 'das' is used.

In a religious context, 'Judentum' (Judaism) is often used with certain verbs. Typical phrases are 'zum Judentum konvertieren' (to convert to Judaism) or 'dem Judentum angehören' (to belong to Judaism).

This meaning can often be recognized from adjectives such as 'europäisch' (European) or 'deutsch' (German). When the topic is history, sociology, or a specific community of people, it refers to the Jewish people as a whole.

Zionism
'Judentum' and 'Zionismus' both have to do with Jewish history and identity, but they mean clearly different things. 'Judentum' refers to the Jewish religion, culture, tradition, and also the Jewish community. 'Zionismus' is a political ideology and movement that aims at or supports a Jewish nation-state in the historic Land of Israel. The words can be confused because both often appear in connection with Jewish topics. The important point is: 'Judentum' is much broader and is not simply the same as 'Zionismus'.
