The government office that supports the head of government, the Federal Chancellor, in Germany or Austria in their official duties, as well as the associated official building.

The word is composed of 'Kanzler' (chancellor) and 'Amt' (office). So it literally refers to the office, meaning the authority and workplace, of the Federal Chancellor.

Pay attention to the difference between movement and location. Movement to the building is expressed with 'ins Kanzleramt' (to/into the Chancellery; accusative), while being there or doing an activity there is described with 'im Kanzleramt' (at/in the Chancellery; dative).

Common verbs used in connection with the Chancellery are 'leiten' (to lead/head), 'arbeiten' (to work), or 'tagen' (to meet/convene). It is also often used for events, which then 'stattfinden' (take place) there.

'die Kanzlei' and 'das Kanzleramt' can easily be confused because they sound similar and both seem official. Today, 'Kanzlei' usually means the office of a lawyer, notary, or tax advisor. In older or special governmental contexts, 'Kanzlei' can also refer to an administrative office. 'Das Kanzleramt', however, is something specific: it is the authority and the building that support the Federal Chancellor in government work. So for private legal matters, you go to a Kanzlei, not to the Kanzleramt.
