'Mitschüler' and 'Klassenkamerad' both mean a boy or man who goes or went to school with someone. 'Mitschüler' can be a bit more general: he may be in the same class, but sometimes he may simply attend the same school. 'Klassenkamerad' is more specific and means someone from the same class, even if the school years are already over. Learners may confuse the words because they often fit in the same situations. If the shared class is important, 'Klassenkamerad' sounds especially appropriate. If it is generally about someone from school, 'Mitschüler' is enough.
