A room in a school building where lessons for a school class take place. It is typically equipped with desks, chairs, a board, and other teaching materials.

The word is composed of 'Klasse' (class), in the form 'Klassen', and 'Zimmer' (room). The 'n' is a linking element that connects the two parts. Literally, it is therefore the room for a school class.

Pay attention to the prepositions: 'im Klassenzimmer' (in the classroom, dative) describes the place where someone is. 'Ins Klassenzimmer' (into the classroom, accusative) describes movement into the room.

Common verbs used in connection with the classroom are 'betreten' (to enter), 'verlassen' (to leave), 'aufräumen' (to tidy up), or simply 'sein' (to be).

'die Klasse' and 'das Klassenzimmer' can both refer to the room where lessons take place. 'Klassenzimmer' is more precise and always means the room with desks, chairs, and a board. 'Klasse' can also mean the room, but it is very often used for the group of students or the grade level. That is why 'Klasse' can easily be misunderstood. If you are clearly talking about the room, 'Klassenzimmer' is usually the safer choice. 'Klasse' fits better when the context is clear or when you are talking about the group.
