In der Schatulle bewahrte sie ein altes Kleinod von ihrer Großmutter auf.

Usage tips
Word structure
The word is made up of 'klein' (small) and the old word 'Od' for possession or wealth, which is no longer used today. A Kleinod is therefore literally a 'small treasure.'
EXAMPLE
Die Brosche war ein altes Familienerbstück und ihr liebstes Kleinod.
The brooch was an old family heirloom and her favorite jewel.
Register and style
'Kleinod' (jewel/gem) is an elevated and rather poetic word. It is rarely used in everyday colloquial speech and often sounds somewhat old-fashioned or literary.
EXAMPLE
In seinen Briefen bezeichnete er die alte Bibliothek als ein Kleinod der Weisheit.
In his letters, he described the old library as a gem of wisdom.
Context clue
You can recognize the figurative meaning by the fact that places or buildings are often described as a 'Kleinod' (gem), for example an old town, a park, or a church. The phrase 'ein wahres Kleinod' (a true gem) is frequently used.
EXAMPLE
Die kleine Kapelle auf dem Berg ist ein wahres Kleinod der Baukunst.
The small chapel on the mountain is a true gem of architecture.

Kleinod vs Schatz
darling / treasure
'der Schatz' and 'das Kleinod' can both refer to something very valuable or beautiful. 'Schatz' is much broader in everyday language: it can be a collection of valuable things or something that one values highly. 'Kleinod' sounds more elevated and sometimes a bit old-fashioned. It often means a small precious object, or, figuratively, a particularly beautiful place or a special building. Learners may confuse the words because both express value. In normal conversations, 'Schatz' is more natural; 'Kleinod' fits better in descriptions of art, history, architecture, or special places.

Die kleine Kapelle im Wald gilt als Kleinod der Region.
The small chapel in the forest is considered a gem of the region.
