'der Schatz' and 'das Kleinod' can both refer to something very valuable or beautiful. 'Schatz' is much broader in everyday language: it can be a collection of valuable things or something that one values highly. 'Kleinod' sounds more elevated and sometimes a bit old-fashioned. It often means a small precious object, or, figuratively, a particularly beautiful place or a special building. Learners may confuse the words because both express value. In normal conversations, 'Schatz' is more natural; 'Kleinod' fits better in descriptions of art, history, architecture, or special places.
