'der Student' and 'der Kommilitone' both belong to the context of university or college. A Student is generally a male person who studies. A Kommilitone is a student at the same college or university as you or as another person mentioned. So the word 'Kommilitone' shows a relationship: he studies with someone at the same university. The words can be confused because every Kommilitone is also a Student. But not every Student is automatically your Kommilitone. 'Student' is more general; 'Kommilitone' fits when the shared university is important.
