'der Künstler' is used for a man, or sometimes generally when gender is not the focus. 'die Künstlerin' is used for a woman. Both words can fit fields such as painting, music, literature, or photography. 'Künstlerin' can also sound especially natural for a woman on stage, for example a singer or dancer. The words can be confusing mainly because of the German articles and endings. So pay attention to whether you are talking about a man, a woman, or the professional group in general.
