It can be used between countries, regions, plots of land, or also in a figurative sense. 'Landesgrenze' is more specific and means the border of a country or of a federal state. In Germany, this can often mean the border between two federal states; for the border between countries, people also often say 'Staatsgrenze' (national border). The words can be confused because every 'Landesgrenze' is a 'Grenze', but not every 'Grenze' is a 'Landesgrenze'.
