The quality of a text in terms of how well it can be visually perceived and read. This refers to aspects such as font, font size, line spacing, and contrast.

The word is derived from the verb 'lesen' (to read). The form 'lesbar' (readable) is an adjective, and the ending '-keit' turns it into an abstract noun that describes a quality.

The two meanings can be distinguished well from context. If it is about 'Schriftart' (font), 'Kontrast' (contrast), or 'Layout' (layout), visual readability is meant. 'die Klarheit' and 'die Lesbarkeit' can both be important when a text is meant to be understood well. 'Klarheit' mainly means that a statement is unambiguous and easy to understand. So it is about the content and the language. 'Lesbarkeit' fits especially with texts and means how easy a text is to read: for example because of the font size, the contrast, or also because of simple sentences. A text can look easy to read but still have little clarity. Conversely, a clear idea can be hard to read if the print is too small.
