liken vs gefallen

to please / to fall

'gefallen' and 'liken' can both show that you feel positively about something. 'gefallen' is used generally: for people, things, places, ideas, or situations. 'liken' is used almost only on social networks, when you click a like button and show approval or liking that way. Learners may confuse the words because 'liken' seems like 'mögen' (to like) or 'gefallen' (to please / to be liked). In German, however, it is tied to the action on the internet. You can like a photo, but you only 'likest' it if you click the button online.
