The word is a clear compound of 'die Luft' (air) and 'die Feuchtigkeit' (moisture/humidity). 'Feuchtigkeit' itself is derived from the adjective 'feucht' (moist/damp). So the word literally describes the moisture in the air.

'die Feuchtigkeit' and 'die Luftfeuchtigkeit' both have to do with water in the environment. 'Feuchtigkeit' is more general: it can be in the air, in walls, in clothing, or on surfaces. 'Luftfeuchtigkeit' refers only to the water vapor in the air and is often measured, for example as a percentage. The words can be confused because humid air can also cause moisture. If you are talking about the indoor climate or the weather, 'Luftfeuchtigkeit' is more precise. If something is clammy or slightly wet, 'Feuchtigkeit' fits better.
